PERSONAL GOALS
I once attended a PMI class were one of the topics was to set personal goals for
life.
I have always been a fan of leaving the future to chance. I feel that if you
know what will happen in the future, life itself becomes boring. Life is a
journey to me. I don’t want to know what is going to happen. That is why I look
forward to tomorrow. I want to see the unexpected and so far so good.
But the lady giving the class was making a lot of sense. She was saying that in
life you have to set goals like being a good husband and father, raising a
family, traveling, learning a musical instrument or a new language, etc.
This was an epiphany to me, as I knew somewhat what I wanted but I never planned
for it. I never took the steps or the time to accomplish them most important
things in life as I had done with my career. In my career and in most careers
things like education, hard work, say the right things, moving from job to job
at the right time will do the trick. But how do you practice to become a father.
Well the first thing I did was to get a dog. I thought that if I can handle a
pet then it would easier to handle children. Then I started making the time to
enjoy the good things that life has to offer. So now I am closer to reaching the
goal of having a “successful family life” than ever before.
If your goal is to travel, then start by visiting the city you live in. I have
encountered so many people that are unaware of the city they live in for years.
It still amazes me how ignorant most people are from their own environment, it
is almost like a disease or lack of interest to learn, to experience, to live.
How can you not know where the best orange juice in you city is, how can you not
know where the biggest park is, where is the best bike trail, or the biggest
fountain, or the best city pool. These are very important things and people
don’t appreciate them. They are consumed by television programs and malls. They
forget to learn and keep on learning.
I hope you take the time to research this topic. It has been an eye opening
experience for me.
